In the area surrounding the castle, you can enjoy a river beach, a zip line that crosses the Fuengirola river and several snack bars in which to savour a refreshing drink.

Sohail Castle is very well connected with the Mediterranean highway: from Malaga, you can get here by car in a little over half an hour; from Marbella, the drive will take less than half an hour; while Mijas Pueblo, another tourist spot in the area, is just 20 minutes away.

For those who prefer to travel by plane, Malaga Airport is 20 minutes away by car, making it a convenient option for visiting this site.

History and Architecture of Sohail Castle

Did you know that this area has been continuously inhabited since the time of the Carthaginians? It is a region with exceptional geographical features, and that is one of the reasons why it has always been populated throughout history. There are signs that the first construction of what would be Sohail Castle emerged in the Muslim era, and was later adapted by the Almoravids in the 12th century.

During the Christian offensive against the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, Sohail Castle was occupied: a key moment in this building’s transformation, bringing it to a point very similar to what we see today. Recently, Sohail Castle underwent restoration works to enable us to enjoy the architecture and the many events that take place there.

If you’d like to delve further into the history of this impressive building, we suggest a visit to the Fuengirola History Museum, where you can discover more about how Sohail Castle evolved over time, in addition to more interesting information about the city.
